I just wanted to let everyone know that I'll no longer be making space shoes (apart from the orders to which I've already committed). My reasons for this are varied, but the main themes are that I don't really find joy in painting them any more - I feel kind of like a machine, and I really have to concentrate on studying, as I'm in my final year of high school and have set my goals pretty high. Thank you to everyone who has liked the shoes, bought a pair or generally supported me in any way. It means a lot to me, and I've gotten further than I ever thought it would. I will still be selling other things from time to time over at my etsy shop, and probably more space shoes in specific sizes, until I clear out all my stock.

I've been busy! In the past couple of days I made these felt necklaces and did a little amateur photo shoot with some space shoes (I'll show the photos in another post) and to top it off I started my last year of schooling today, juggling a photo shoot requests from a local magazine and 9 pending space shoe orders! I've been busy and I'm gong to stay busy apparently.
I have, however, found time to make these felt necklaces the newest addition to my Etsy store. I hand cut them from sheeted felt, generating the asymmetric pattern as I worked, making each truly unique. The 'thicker' one in the second and third photographs has already sold, but the thinner one is still available here and ready to be shipped.

The Alchemist picked up a book that someone in the caravan had brought. Leafing through the pages, he found a story about Narcissus. The alchemist knew the legend of Narcissus, a youth who daily knelt beside a lake to contemplate his own beauty. He was so fascinated by himself that, one morning, he fell into the lake and drowned. At the spot where he fell, a flower was born, which was called the narcissus.

But this was not how the author of the book ended the story.

He said that when Narcissus died, the Goddesses of the Forest appeared and found the lake, which had been fresh water, transformed into a lake of salty tears.

"Why do you weep?" the Goddesses asked.

"I weep for Narcissus," the lake replied.

"Ah, it is no surprise that you weep for Narcissus," they said, "for though we always pursued him in the forest, you alone could contemplate his beauty close at hand."

"But..... was Narcissus beautiful?" the lake asked.

"Who better than you to know that?" the Goddesses said

in wonder, "After all, it was by your banks that he knelt each

day to contemplate himself!!"

The lake was silent for some time.

Finally it said:

Sometimes I get all antsy about people replicating the space shoes I paint.
"You can't so that! That was MY original idea!"
is what I sometimes feel like shouting at them.Then I get start to annoyed when commenters praise their work.
"WOW. That is such a gr8 idea! You should totally sell them. I'd defs buy them!!!"
And this just makes me feel jealous and ripped off.

But then I realise, I copy other's work all the time too. Just testing out what I can do, seeing where it goes. I think it's just part of being an [insert word that's similar to, but is not artist*] A prime example of my plagiaristic skill is the two images above. The one on the left is one I drew last year after seeing Studio Violet's cute postcards (right). It's obviously the same moustachioed man, but I didn't admit it at the time. I should have though. And ultimately, I think, it's okay as long as you don't sell other people's ideas as your own. If you publish something extremely similar to someone else's work, link back to them and do not sell it. Ever.

So in this spirit, here are a few of the better space shoe copycats that I've seen around.

*Because I really wouldn't call myself one. Except when my friends joke about me not having a job. In that case, I'm a successful freelance artist, hehe.

I love this idea so much! Meet Me At Mike's is hosting The Envelope Project - and it's still running! (I always find out about these things after they're finished)

Basically, you get a cutesy envelope which you've decorated to your heart's content for display in the front window of the Meet Me At Mike's Shop and you fill it with lovely treasures. Sweet nothings that aren't too pricey or too heavy. You put it all in the envelope and send it off to the address above. When the lovely people at the shop receive your envelope, they take out your presents, photograph them, upload the photos to flickr here and display your envelope in the shopfront window. At the end of the six week limit, they'll pick one luck envelope sender and mail them the entire haul of treasures! How lovely would it be to receive that in your mail box?
I'm sending mine tomorrow. You'd best be quick - there are only a few short weeks left!

So I'm nearly sure I'll be selling space shoes, and possibly other painted shoes on Etsy in the very near future. I have ideas about pricing, but I was wondering what you guys think. Please comment and let me know ~

1. How much would you like to pay for shoes like this?

I've been busy busy making more shoes and, most importantly, I got a stamp! Haha, I love it, it says my name and everything! But apart from my excitement over the new stamp, I've been trying to work out a few things with this little 'business'. It feels so odd to call it that. I'd really like to set up an etsy account but as I don't have a credit card I'm still working out the logistics. Ever since I was little I've wanted to have a business selling somthing I'd made. Clothing, photography, hand crafts, flowers, artwork, it didn't matter what it was. Just so long as it was beautiful, I'd made it and people wanted to buy it. I always wanted a name with the words 'ruby' and 'rose' however I was prepared to settle with 'Chloe', 'lace' or 'pearl'. Then I discovered Rose and Ruby. I'm saddened that Rose and Ruby stole my name, but it really couldn't have gone to a more lovely company. (I secretly knew it would be gone, even before I googled it.) I am in love with their romantic designs and especially adore their slik flowers. They source fine french lace and design for the woman who is modern, sophisticated and effortlessly chic. They base their designs on elegance, romance and beauty. It relly sounds like the wonderous design house of heaven to me. *sigh* If only...

Ma Boy's Illustration Blog

These lovely images are from Ma Boy's Illustration Blog which posts illustrations by two tallented boys named Daniel (age 8) and Israel (age 9). I think this is both cute and totally inspiring. These boys obviously put a lot of care into the detail of these illustrations. As far as I can tell they have a theme each week and come up with different interpretations in the form of an illustration. I really like how they use different mediums too, instead of simply sticking with paper anc coloured pencils. My favourites are the little birdie who says that wearing your seatbelt is safe and the walrus/seal (I'm not great with names of any sorts, haha) which illustrates the theme of 'Fat'. Wonderful.

Ahh, long time no see. Sorry about that. I've just had all of my end of semester exams and assignments (the last of which i should be doing now) and I really did wish I had time to blog, but the simple fact is that I didn't.

Anyway, today I really wanted to tell you about an online game which is actually not new at all but I just remembered about it's brilliance recently. I have to give a warning that anyone who has any real work to do should not even open this game because it is extremely addictive. (It must be pretty addictive because that is the first time I have used italics on this blog ever.) Actually, I lied, it's not one game, there are three different scenarios and additionally, I am waffling a whole lot. To the point. The game is called The Crimson Room and was created by Takagism, the brand of a pretty cool Japanese artist.

Basically, you wake up after a big night and you're in some room you've never seen before. Obviously, you have to get out. This game really got me thinking and is very challenging. I know my explanation probably doesn't sound that grand, but for those of you who like a puzzle, this is great.

It is really hard to resist the urge to google for a walkthrough, but I guarantee, finish this by yourself and you will get the best feeling of accomplishment.

I know this isn't by any means a gaming blog and while I'm on the topic of off-topic things, never watch this.
